Beaumaris Gaol and Courthouse

The Victorian prison that dominates Beaumaris' town centre pulls you straight back to the 1800s. Opened in 1829, this imposing limestone building is where petty criminals and political prisoners were held, and where public executions used to draw crowds. You walk through the actual cells - cramped, cold, utterly grim - and stand in the courtroom where sentences were handed down. The gallows are still there, which hits differently once you're standing beneath them.

It's genuinely unsettling in the best way. History buffs will spend a good two hours reading every placard and soaking up the detail; families with younger kids might manage 45 minutes before the brutality of it all starts wearing thin. Older teenagers, though, tend to find it properly gripping.

The building functions as both gaol and courthouse, so you get the full picture of Victorian justice - from arrest to trial to execution. The audio guide (if they still do it) helps enormously. Admission is modest, and it's open year-round, though winter afternoons can feel genuinely eerie in the cells.

Beaumaris itself is worth lingering in - the castle is right on the waterfront, and there are decent pubs and fish-and-chip shops dotted around. If you're camped at Kingsbridge or Wonderfully Wild nearby, this is a solid two-hour stop that'll justify half a day in town. Don't expect cheerful; expect authentic.
