Beck Head Stream Cave

The stream runs straight into the hillside and just vanishes. That's Beck Head - a proper sinkhole cave near Settle where water disappears underground, and you can actually follow it in if you're prepared to get wet. It's one of those Yorkshire Dales features that doesn't shout about itself, which is exactly why it's worth finding.

You'll need to wade through the stream to reach the cave mouth itself, so waterproof boots are non-negotiable. The cave system extends back into darkness, but most casual visitors content themselves with poking around the entrance and watching the water vanish into the rock. It's genuinely striking - one moment there's a proper burn flowing downhill, the next it's gone into shadow and limestone. The walk in from the lane is straightforward enough, though the final approach involves crossing fields.

This appeals most to geology enthusiasts and walkers who want something off the usual circuit. Kids will find it weird and wonderful for about twenty minutes before wanting to move on. Families based at Dalesbridge Campsite or Orcaber Farm, both within a couple of miles, could easily combine it with the broader Settle landscape - the town itself has proper limestone scenery and walking routes in every direction.

There's no charge, no facilities, and no crowds. Go when it's not rained heavily, unless you fancy a proper soaking. Best tackled as part of a wider day exploring the Ribblesdale area rather than as a destination in itself.
