Beeches Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Royston, Beeches Wood is the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Ancient beech trees tower overhead, creating that cathedral-like quiet you rarely find near towns these days. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, carpeted with leaf matter and moss, especially lovely after rain when everything smells exactly how a forest should.

It's ideal for families who want to burn off some energy without planning a major expedition. Kids will find sticks, spot birds, maybe spot deer if they're lucky and quiet enough. The paths are manageable for most ages, though wellies are wise in winter. You're looking at an hour or so for a proper wander, or just twenty minutes if you're after a quick leg-stretch between other activities.

Historically-minded types might appreciate that these ancient beeches have been here for centuries, watching the landscape change around them. It's one of those places that grounds you a bit, if you're paying attention.

If you're staying at Pightle Farm Campsite nearby, Beeches Wood makes an excellent half-morning activity before heading elsewhere. It won't take the whole day, but that's rather the point - sometimes a decent wood is just a decent wood, no need to overthink it. Free access, no gates to fight through, just turn up and go.
