Beeching-grove Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Marlow, Beeching-grove Wood is the sort of place locals keep quiet about. Ancient beech and oak trees tower above the forest floor, with paths that wind through bracken and moss-covered banks. It's peaceful - genuinely so - without feeling remote or difficult to reach.

The appeal here is straightforward. You're walking through working woodland where the trees do the talking. No visitor centre, no cafe, no interpretation panels. Just forest. Families with younger kids will manage an hour easily; proper walkers could spend a good two hours exploring the different trails without hitting any major obstacles. Bring boots though - it gets muddy in patches, particularly after rain.

The nearest town is Marlow, which sits right on the Thames and pulls in its fair share of riverside tourists. Beeching-grove works brilliantly as a morning excursion if you're based at Chiltern Retreat Rural Camping just a few miles away - gives you a proper woodland counterpoint to the manicured park environment.

It's free to wander in, and there's no official time restriction that we're aware of. The wood is at its best in spring when the bluebells arrive, though autumn when the beech turns copper is worth a visit too. Summer can feel crowded by woodland standards, and winter is wet but oddly atmospheric.

If you're expecting manicured forest walks with information boards, look elsewhere. But if you want to actually be among trees without the faffing about, this delivers. Not Instagram-friendly, which rather suits it.
