Beinn Ruadh

The walk up Beinn Ruadh from Dunoon is straightforward enough - a decent hill rather than a proper mountain, which means you won't need technical kit or a dawn start to bag the summit. The path climbs through mixed woodland before opening out onto moorland, and the views back down to the Holy Loch are genuinely worth the effort. On a clear day you can see across to the Clyde estuary and beyond.

It's the sort of walk that suits families with older kids or anyone after a solid two-to-three-hour outing without the slog of the bigger peaks nearby. The ascent is steady rather than brutal, though it can be boggy in places after rain. Allow three hours return if you're not rushed, maybe longer if you want to linger at the top.

For a park-based holiday, this sits nicely within striking distance of Loch Eck Caravan Park and Stratheck Holiday Park - both within a mile or so. It's a useful addition to a longer walking break rather than the main event, but it punches above its weight for the effort involved. The surrounding area offers plenty of other coastal and woodland routes if the weather turns or you fancy something gentler. Dunoon itself is close enough for supplies and a proper coffee afterwards, which frankly is half the point of a midweek hill walk.
