Beinn Sgluich

The walk up Beinn Sgluich from Appin is a proper hill rather than a mountain, which means you get real views without needing rope skills or a dawn start. It's a straightforward enough climb if you've got steady legs and an hour or so to spare. The peak sits above the A828, and on a clear day you're looking out towards the Firth of Lorn and beyond - that's where the walk earns its keep.

This one's best for walkers who want something between a stroll and a proper mountain hike. You won't need special gear, but waterproofs are essential - Scottish weather has opinions of its own. Allow two to three hours return, depending on fitness and how long you potter about at the top taking photos.

Family groups with older kids might find it rewarding if the weather cooperates; younger ones could get bored trudging uphill with no summit cairn payoff to rush towards. Serious peak baggers will find it a useful addition if they're working through the area.

If you're camped at Creagan Station Tourers just down the road, this makes an excellent morning or afternoon outing without driving far. Oban Camping and Caravanning Club Site is slightly further but still reasonable. Either way, you're combining some proper hill air with staying local - no wasted time on lengthy transfers.
