Bell Hill

Views across the Lake District unfold magnificently from this modest fell just south of Kendal. Bell Hill stands at 558 metres, offering one of the most accessible summit experiences in the southern Lakes without the crowds that plague the more famous peaks.

Walkers keen on a proper workout will find the ascent challenging but not punishing - expect about two hours up from the nearest parking spots. The path cuts through typical Lakeland terrain of bracken and rough grass, with limestone outcrops providing natural stepping stones on the steeper sections.

Reach the top and you'll understand why locals keep this one relatively quiet. Windermere stretches out to the north, while the Howgills roll away eastward. On clear days, the view takes in Morecambe Bay and even the Pennines beyond.

Families with older children who fancy something more adventurous than the usual lake shore strolls will get a real sense of achievement here. Younger kids might struggle with the gradient and loose scree near the top.

Staying at one of the nearby sites like Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club or Park Cliffe makes Bell Hill an excellent morning expedition. You'll be back down in time for lunch and a proper rest before tackling the tourist trails around Bowness later.
