Ben Nevis Visitor Centre sits right at the foot of Britain's highest mountain, giving you that immediate sense of scale - the peak looms above, often shrouded in cloud even when the lowlands are blazing sunshine.

Inside, it's all interactive displays about the mountain's geology, the weather systems that batter the summit, and the various routes up. There's a café that does decent coffee and the sort of sandwiches you'd expect - not fancy, but they hit the spot after a walk. Most people spend an hour here, longer if you're genuinely interested in the natural history rather than just grabbing a map and heading out.

This is primarily for walkers and hikers. If you're not planning to tackle the mountain itself, you might find it a touch limited - the views from the centre car park are decent but don't require an entrance fee to enjoy. The café is accessible without paying for the centre proper, which many day-trippers already know.

Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park is practically on your doorstep - half a mile away - so it's the obvious base if you're doing the mountain properly. The visitor centre makes sense as a morning stop before heading up, or an afternoon refuge if the weather turns. Ben Nevis Holiday Park, two miles north towards Fort William, gives you slightly more space and easier access to town shops and restaurants. Either way, you're well positioned for the Scottish Highlands proper.
