Mullach nan Coirean

The walk up Mullach nan Coirean isn't the most famous peak in the Fort William area, but that's rather the point. At 3,077 feet, it sits just shy of Munro status - the Scottish threshold that sends baggers racing to their checklists - which means the ridge gets a fraction of the crowds you'd encounter on nearby Ben Nevis.

The approach is straightforward enough. Most walkers start from the Glen Nevis visitor area and head across moorland before tackling the ridge proper. The views from the top sweep across to Ben Nevis on one side and down into Glen Coe on the other - genuinely good ones, not the postcard cliché you might expect. On a clear day, which admittedly requires patience and planning in the Highlands, you can see right across to the western mountains.

It's a solid half-day walk rather than an epic expedition. Allow four to five hours return from the Glen Nevis carpark. The terrain is rough underfoot in places - bog and loose scree aren't uncommon - so proper boots matter more than fancy gear.

Who benefits? Hill walkers wanting something meaty but not soul-crushing. Families with older kids who've done a few peaks already. It's honest terrain without pretension. Not for those after a casual stroll, and definitely not if the cloud is sitting low - the views are half the draw.

Stay at Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park or Invercoe nearby and you're ideally placed. Base yourself there for a few days and you've got Ben Nevis, Mullach nan Coirean, and the Glen Coe hills all within easy reach.
