Ben Wyvis National Nature Reserve

The walk up Ben Wyvis isn't your typical Highland stroll. The mountain dominates the landscape around Strathpeffer, and once you're on the reserve itself, you're in proper wild country - peatland, moorland, and the sort of wind that'll test your waterproofs. The reserve covers nearly 4,000 hectares, so you're not squeezed in with crowds.

For serious walkers, this is the main draw. The summit sits at 1,046 metres and the path is well-trodden but steep in places. Allow a good five to six hours for the round trip from the car park. The views across the Highlands repay the effort on clear days, though "clear" is relative up here. Birdwatchers get value too - golden eagles, ptarmigan, and red grouse use this terrain, and the moorland birds reward patience.

Families with younger kids will find the reserve more rewarding if you pick a shorter section. The lower slopes have decent walking without the big summit push, and there's something satisfying about moving through that much open space. Don't expect facilities though. There are no visitor centres, cafes, or anywhere to shelter, so proper preparation matters.
