Benacre Wood

The woodland around Benacre doesn't announce itself. You're driving through the Kent countryside near Canterbury, and suddenly there's a proper stretch of forest - older trees, dappled light, the kind of place that feels like it's been left alone for years. This is ancient woodland, and it shows in the way the paths twist and the undergrowth closes in around you.

It's a working forest more than a manicured attraction, which means there's no visitor centre or gift shop, no crowds fighting over parking. You just turn up and walk. The paths are decent enough if you know where you're going, though signage is minimal - bring a map or check locally first. Families with young kids will find it manageable for an hour or so; older children who like actual forest exploring rather than tidied-up park trails will rate it more. Serious walkers use it as a proper stretch of legs, weaving between the trees and picking routes through the woodland floor.

There's no entry fee that I'm aware of, which is refreshing. Allow a couple of hours if you want to do it justice, longer if you're in no rush. Go in autumn when the light's right, not mid-summer when it's just dense green.

Stays at Seasalter Holiday Park or Seaview Holiday Park put you within easy reach - both are closer than Canterbury itself. This works well as a morning excursion before heading to the coast or exploring the cathedral city. It's not a destination in itself, but it's exactly the kind of spot worth knowing about when you're staying nearby.
