But the city's appeal runs deeper than its famous church. Wander down Mercery Lane or through the King's School grounds and you're treading paths worn smooth by centuries of footfall.

Beyond the ancient walls, Kent's countryside unfolds in gentle hills and dense woodland. East Blean Wood offers proper walking trails just minutes from the city centre, whilst Stodmarsh National Nature Reserve stretches across wetlands where bitterns boom in winter reed beds. These aren't token green spaces - they're substantial chunks of countryside where you can lose yourself for hours.

Getting here is straightforward enough. Canterbury sits on the main London-Dover railway line, with regular services from St Pancras taking just over an hour. The A2 delivers drivers from London in similar time, though parking in the city centre costs a small fortune.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You get the countryside setting without sacrificing easy access to Canterbury's sights. Several parks cluster within a few miles, offering everything from basic camping to luxury glamping. After a day navigating tourist crowds around the cathedral, retreating to rural Kent feels like stepping back in time - in the best possible way.
