Benfield Hill

Standing at 217 metres, this chalk down offers sweeping views across the Sussex countryside without the crowds you'll find on more famous peaks. The climb up from Henfield takes about 45 minutes through gentle farmland and ancient woodland - proper boot weather required after rain as the bridleway can get muddy.

Walkers and landscape photographers will get the most from this spot. The panoramic vista takes in the River Adur valley, Devil's Dyke in the distance, and on clear days you can spot the English Channel glinting beyond Brighton. It's part of the South Downs Way, so you can easily extend your walk in either direction.

Families should know there's no parking directly at the summit - you'll need to start from Henfield village and walk. The terrain isn't pushchair-friendly, but older children who can manage a decent hike will love the space to run about once you reach the top. Pack a picnic and make an afternoon of it.

For those staying at nearby holiday parks like Foot of the Downs or Brighton Caravan Club, it's a cracking half-day excursion. The walk back down to Henfield passes some lovely old flint cottages, and the village has a proper pub for a well-earned pint afterwards.
