Bennerley Viaduct

The railway viaduct at Bennerley is one of those Victorian engineering moments that stops you mid-walk. Built in 1875, this wrought-iron structure stretches across the landscape like something from an industrial painting - all red brick, latticed metalwork, and that particular kind of permanence you don't see much anymore. It's properly impressive up close, especially if you approach from the valley floor where you can actually appreciate the span and height of the thing.

You're looking at a viewpoint rather than a destination where you'd spend hours, but that's rather the point. The walk here - roughly twenty minutes from Ironville station if you're coming via public transport - is pleasant enough, rolling through countryside that feels worlds away from the nearby urban sprawl around Nottingham. The viaduct itself is best photographed in late afternoon when the light catches the metalwork. If you're into industrial heritage or Victorian engineering, this is worth the detour. Kids will get it - something about massive iron structures appeals to them immediately - but they won't linger.

It's free to view, obviously, and there's no formal admission. The real draw is combining it with a stay at one of the nearby caravan parks. Golden Valley or Riddings Wood are both within six miles, making this an easy add-on to a weekend in the area. Go early morning if you want decent light for photographs without crowds. It's the sort of place that rewards a proper look but won't demand your entire afternoon.
