Benson Knott

Benson Knott sits just above Kendal, a proper fell rather than a mountain - the sort of place locals walk to for their Sunday afternoon rather than make a fuss about. You get there on foot from the town itself, which means no car park politics and a genuinely walkable proposition. The summit's modest at around 500 metres, but the views down over Kendal and across the Lakeland valleys are genuinely worth the leg work. On a clear day you'll see proper distance.

It's not a challenge for experienced fell-walkers, which makes it ideal for families or anyone wanting a decent walk without the Alpine drama. The path's well-trodden and doesn't demand specialist kit - good boots and the weather sense to check the forecast before you head out. Allow roughly 90 minutes up and down from town, depending on how much time you spend faffing about at the top.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Kendal Camping and Caravanning Club Site is barely a mile away - this makes a cracking evening walk before tea. Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site is four and a half miles off if you're staying that way, still an easy drive. Don't expect solitude on summer weekends, but the walk rewards you with real views rather than Instagram fantasy. It's the sort of hill that reminds you why people bother with the Lakes at all.
