Bentley Woods

Ancient woodland doesn't come much more atmospheric than this. Bentley Woods, just outside Calne, is one of those places where you can actually feel the age seeping through the trees - proper old growth forest with paths that have probably been walked for centuries.

What you're doing here is straightforward: walking. The woodland itself is the attraction. Gnarled oaks, beech trees thick enough to hug, and a floor soft with moss and leaf litter. It's the kind of place where the light filters through in that particular way that makes you understand why people used to think forests were magical. There's no visitor centre or café, no playground or novelty to manufacture interest - just actual woodland being itself.

Historians and nature-lovers will get the most from it. Families with younger children might find an hour about right before restlessness sets in, but if you've got kids who actually enjoy being outdoors rather than on a screen, this works beautifully. Walkers will appreciate the quietness and the lack of crowds.

Practically, you're looking at free access - there's no gate or entrance fee to worry about. Bring decent boots if the ground's been wet. Calne itself is small but functional if you need supplies before or after.

Staying at Blackland Lakes, just 0.7 miles away, makes this a proper no-brainer for a morning walk before breakfast or an evening wander when the light's going golden. It's the kind of wood that rewards getting a bit lost in.
