About Berkhamsted Hill
This is walkers' territory. The hill itself isn't massive - you're looking at perhaps an hour up and back - but it works well as part of a longer ramble through the area. Families with kids aged eight or so upwards will manage fine; younger children might flag a bit on the incline. The views aren't dramatic enough to hold attention for hours, so don't expect your children to stand about gazing at the landscape. Get to the top, have a snack, maybe a drink, and move on.
What makes it worthwhile is the combination with the surrounding countryside. You're close enough to several of the local camping spots - Highridge Farm and Fuzzy's Farm are just down the road - to make this a sensible morning walk before heading back for lunch. Whelpley Hill Park is equally convenient. The terrain underfoot is typical Chilterns: a bit muddy when wet, chalky when dry.
Timing matters. Weekday mornings are quieter. The path can get busy with dog walkers at weekends. Spring and autumn are best - summer can feel airless at the top, winter paths get slick. Free to walk, obviously. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking your time and want to explore the surrounding paths properly.
