Hemel Hempstead

The ring of green hills surrounding this new town creates an unexpectedly wild backdrop for suburban sprawl. Hemel Hempstead sits in a valley where ancient earthworks and wartime defences tell stories spanning millennia. Most visitors write it off as just another commuter town, but they're missing the point entirely.

Berkhamsted Hill offers proper walking with cracking views across the Chilterns, while Pipers Hill provides a gentler climb through beech woods. The countryside here feels properly old - Grimms Ditch cuts through the landscape like a massive prehistoric scar, and you'll stumble across WW2 Anti-tank Bollards dotting the fields as reminders of more recent history.

Woodlands stretch in every direction from the town centre. Hill Wood makes for lovely dog walks, while HollBrown's Spring Wood and Highpark Wood offer deeper exploration into the Chiltern Hills. Saint Margarets Copse and Whitfield Spring provide quieter spots where you can escape the M25 traffic noise that occasionally drifts up from the valley.

Memorials scattered across the area - the Brownlow Memorial, Little Gaddesden War Memorial, and Lady Marian Alford Memorial - reflect the deep connections between these communities and the wider world. It's not chocolate-box countryside, but it's real and lived-in.

Getting here couldn't be easier. Twenty minutes from central London by train, with the M1 and M25 providing road links. The surrounding campsites and holiday parks make excellent bases for exploring both the immediate hills and the broader Chilterns. You're close enough to nip into London for the day, but far enough out to feel like you've properly escaped.
