Big Sand Beach

The stretch of sand at Big Sand Beach just outside Gairloch is genuinely vast - mile after mile of the stuff, backed by dunes and looking out towards the Summer Isles. On a decent day it's properly stunning; on a grey one it's moody in a way that feels very Highland. The beach itself is working sand, not the manicured kind you get down south. Shells, seaweed, the occasional bit of driftwood. Dogs love it. Kids can disappear into the dunes for hours without bothering anyone.

It's the kind of place where you come to walk rather than sunbathe, though sun does happen here. Bring layers. The water's cold enough to wake you up if you're brave, but paddling is what most people do. Car park's right there, which is convenient - no hidden-away faff. Free to visit, no time limit.

If you're staying at Sands Caravan & Camping just up the road, this is your backyard really. Even without a caravan, it makes a proper day out from Gairloch itself. Combine it with a walk to Rubh Reidh lighthouse if you've got the legs, or simply spend an afternoon hunting for sea glass. It's not flashy, but that's rather the point. The Highlands don't need to shout.
