Snorkel An Dun (North West Highlands Snorkel Trail)

The North West Highlands Snorkel Trail takes you underwater along a stretch of coastline near Gairloch where the water is surprisingly clear and teeming with life. This isn't a built attraction - it's a wild swim with purpose, marked out so you can safely explore kelp forests, sea creatures, and rocky reefs without needing a boat.

You'll need your own snorkel gear and a reasonable level of water confidence. The trail itself is manageable for adults and older teenagers who are comfortable in the sea, though children should be supervised closely. What makes it special is how accessible it feels - no certification needed, no guides required, just you and the Scottish coastline doing its thing. The water's cold even in summer (think 12-14°C), so a wetsuit isn't optional. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing this properly, including kit changes and a warm-up afterwards.

Timing matters. Spring and early autumn tend to offer the best visibility. Summer brings more tourists and potentially murkier water from freshwater runoff. Winter's dramatic but seriously chilly.

If you're camping at Sands Caravan & Camping just down the road, this fits perfectly into a week exploring the northwest coast. It's the kind of thing you do once and either think "brilliant, I'm coming back" or "lovely but once is enough" - depends entirely on your relationship with cold seawater. Gairloch itself has other walks and beaches if you want to combine it with less aquatic adventures.
