Big Wood

Walking through this ancient woodland just outside Church Stretton feels like stepping into a fairy tale. The canopy towers overhead, filtering sunlight into dancing patterns across the forest floor, while well-maintained paths wind between oak, ash and beech trees that have stood here for centuries.

Families with children will find plenty to explore - fallen logs make natural climbing frames, and there's always something rustling in the undergrowth to spark young imaginations. Dog walkers particularly love the freedom here, though keeping pets on leads near nesting season shows proper respect for the wildlife.

What strikes you most is the genuine sense of wilderness so close to town. The deeper you venture, the more the outside world fades away. It's proper woodland walking - expect mud in winter and take decent boots whatever the season.

Allow at least two hours if you want to explore properly, though you could easily spend half a day here with a picnic. The woods connect beautifully with the wider Shropshire Hills network, making it a cracking addition to any stay at nearby parks like Wheathill Touring Park or Church Stretton Camp and Fish. Early morning visits reward you with the best chance of spotting deer and hearing the full dawn chorus.
