Bigbury Beach

The walk down to Bigbury Beach takes you through proper Devon countryside before you hit sand backed by steep cliffs and a scatter of rock pools. It's a serious contender if you're based near Kingsbridge - the beach has real character, with Burgh Island sitting just offshore like something from an Agatha Christie novel. The sand stretches wide at low tide, which is when you'll want to be here; at high tide it shrinks considerably and the beach loses its appeal.

Families will get hours out of the rock pools, and there's enough space that even on busy days you can find your own patch. The walk from the car park is steep enough to keep the casual crowds at bay, so you're unlikely to find it rammed. Swimming's decent here when conditions align - check the tides before you go, because timing matters.

If you're camped at South Devon Camping at Lower Terawhiti Farm just up the road, Bigbury becomes a natural morning trip. It's close enough for a beach day without needing to trek across half the county. Karrageen Caravan & Camping Park is also within easy striking distance. The nearby towns of Kingsbridge offer supplies and decent cafes if you need breakfast before heading out.

Truth is, Bigbury works best as part of a wider South Devon beach hop rather than a standalone destination. But for those prepared to time their visit right and put in a modest walk, it's worth the effort. The cliffs alone make it feel wilder than many better-known beaches hereabouts.
