Birchtree Wood

You'll find yourself in proper Sussex woodland the moment you step into Birchtree Wood - densely planted broadleaves, a thick carpet of last season's leaves underfoot, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how little birdsong you usually hear. It's a relatively modest woodland site near Bexhill-on-Sea, the sort of place locals walk their dogs rather than tourists queue for, which is frankly its best quality.

There's nothing dramatic about it - no viewpoints, no rare species plaques, no café. Just woodland. That said, it's exactly what you want on a humid summer day when the beach feels too exposed, or if you've got restless kids who need to burn energy among the trees without you having to drive far.

Walkers will spend an hour here comfortably, possibly ninety minutes if you're the type to pause and listen. The woodland's close enough to Bexhill that you could loop it into a bigger day out - the town centre isn't far for a late lunch. Spring's lovely when the floor fills with bluebells, though you'd want to check locally for current access status and any seasonal restrictions before you head over.
