Just outside Canterbury, Birley's Pavilion and Playing Fields is a proper local sports ground that won't be on most tourists' radar - and that's exactly the point. This is where you come if you want to watch actual cricket or football being played by clubs who know what they're doing, not just stroll around looking at manicured lawns.

The pavilion itself is a straightforward brick affair with a clubhouse that does what it says on the tin. The playing fields spread out nicely enough, and on match days there's genuine energy here. You'll see club cricket in summer, football in winter, and the kind of Sunday afternoon athletics that gets proper crowds. It's the sort of place where locals actually know each other's names.

This works best if you're camping nearby - Canterbury Camping and Caravanning Club Campsite is barely a mile away, or you could base yourself at Brook Farm Glamping or Mount Ephraim if you fancy something with a bit more comfort. If there's a match on and you've got kids who aren't completely allergic to sports, it's a decent few hours. Free to watch from the boundary most of the time.

But be honest with yourself: this is only worth the trip if there's actual sport happening. Turn up on a Tuesday in November and you'll find an empty field.
