Standing in the centre of Bishop Auckland, this Victorian town hall cuts an imposing figure - all red brick and confident architecture from an era when such buildings meant something. It's the sort of place that anchors a town, literally and figuratively.

You're mainly looking at it from outside, admiring the stonework and getting a sense of the town's Victorian ambitions. The interior hosts occasional events and exhibitions, though access isn't guaranteed without something on. It's worth a wander past if you're already exploring Bishop Auckland's town centre - and you should be, as it's got decent independent shops and decent pubs - but you won't need more than ten minutes unless there's a specific event happening.

Walkers and history types will appreciate it more than families with small kids. It's a proper example of Victorian civic pride, the sort of building that tells you something about what mattered to people 150 years ago. If you're staying at The Gables Pod Camping just outside town or any of the other parks within a few miles - Eden Grange Glamping, High Farm Holiday Park - it makes sense to pop into town for an hour anyway, pick up some supplies, grab lunch. The town hall is part of that texture.

Witton Castle is only a few miles away if you want actual ruins to explore and trails to walk. Combined with the town itself, it's a solid half-day if you've got the time. Otherwise, one look will do.
