Bishop Auckland

Three Laws peak rises from the surrounding moorland like a proper North Pennine giant, offering cracking views across County Durham's wild uplands. This market town sits where the River Gaunless meets the Wear, surrounded by some of England's most dramatic fell country. The landscape here shifts from gentle river valleys to windswept moorland in minutes - one moment you're wandering through sheltered woodlands, the next you're climbing towards High Black Hill with nothing but heather and sky ahead.

Bishop Auckland itself has a quietly impressive palace that once housed the Prince Bishops of Durham, though most visitors come for the gateway it provides to Weardale. The real draw lies in the surrounding countryside. Greenfoot Quarry makes for a lovely walk, its still waters reflecting the changing moods of the Pennine weather. During summer months, Weardale Open Air Pool becomes a magnet for families brave enough to tackle its chilly waters - it's been refreshing locals since 1963 and shows no signs of stopping.

Reaching the town is straightforward enough. The A68 cuts through from Newcastle, while regular buses connect to Durham and Darlington. Most folk arrive by car though - you'll need wheels to properly explore the fells and valleys that make this corner of Durham so rewarding.

Staying at one of the nearby parks puts you right in the heart of walking country. From here, you can tackle the high peaks by day and return to comfortable accommodation by evening. The proximity to both the North Pennines AONB and Teesdale makes it an excellent base for serious fell walkers.
