Bishops Wood Hillfort

Iron Age earthworks crown a modest hill between Trispen and the coast, where ancient ramparts still mark the boundaries of what was once a fortified settlement. Walking the perimeter takes about twenty minutes, following grassy banks and ditches that archaeologists reckon date back over 2,000 years. The fort's defensive walls aren't spectacular - don't expect Maiden Castle drama - but there's something rather moving about tracing the footsteps of Cornwall's earliest inhabitants.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the site's understated authenticity. No interpretation boards or visitor centre here, just you and the landscape as the Celts knew it. The views across farmland towards Truro aren't bad either, though nothing to write home about. Kids might find it a bit dull unless they're properly into Romans and ancient Britons.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though paths can get muddy after rain. Allow an hour if you're keen on archaeology, half that if you just fancy a gentle walk. Worth combining with other Cornish heritage sites rather than making a special trip. Staying at nearby Carnon Downs or Treamble Valley puts you well placed for exploring the area's quieter historical corners without the summer crowds that descend on Cornwall's more famous attractions.
