Black Buttress

The walk up to Black Buttress rewards you with one of Swansea's finest coastal views, though it's not a destination that'll take your breath away in the tourist-board sense. This is a proper hillside vantage point rather than some dramatic rock formation, and that's rather the point. From here you can see right across the bay, with decent sightlines towards the Gower Peninsula when the weather cooperates.

It's a straightforward climb from the surrounding footpaths, manageable for most people with reasonable fitness. Allow 20 minutes to get up there and find a spot to sit, another 10 if you're moving slowly. Bring a jacket - the wind gets a bit lively up top. This works best as a detour during a longer walk rather than a standalone trip; you'd feel short-changed making a special journey just for this.

Families with older kids who like easy walks will get something from it. Photographers might find it useful for capturing the bay in decent light. History types won't find much to chew on here. The real value is for caravan users at Pitton Cross or Hillend, both within two miles - it's a decent leg-stretch when you've been stationary for a day or two, and it connects you to the broader Gower walking network without committing to a full coastal trek.

Free to access, naturally. No facilities up there, so bring water. Go on a clear day - overcast weather renders the view fairly dull.
