Black Hill

Scrambling up the bracken-covered slopes east of Exeter, Black Hill rewards the effort with proper views across the Exe Valley. This modest Devon peak won't trouble serious fell walkers - it's more of a steady afternoon climb - but the panorama from the top takes in the cathedral spires of Exeter and stretches to Dartmoor on clear days. The path can get muddy after rain, so come prepared with decent boots. Families with older children will manage fine, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections through the woodland. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip, including time to catch your breath at the summit. Early morning walkers often have the place to themselves, with only the sheep for company. The hill sits conveniently close to several holiday parks along the coast - Devon Cliffs and Ladram Bay are both within easy driving distance, making this a decent inland excursion when you've had enough of sand between your toes. Not the most dramatic peak in Devon, but well worth the walk for those staying nearby.
