Estuary View

The view from here stretches across the Exe Estuary with enough width and depth to make you properly stop and take it in. You're looking out over tidal mudflats, salt marshes, and the river meandering toward the sea - the sort of landscape that changes completely depending on whether the tide's in or out. It's a proper working estuary, not prettified, which makes it more interesting than many coastal lookouts.

This works best for birdwatchers and estuary enthusiasts rather than families after a dramatic clifftop moment. The Exe hosts significant numbers of overwintering wildfowl and waders, so binoculars and a decent bird book will keep you occupied. Walkers doing the South West Coast Path or exploring the Exeter area en route between Devon Cliffs Resort and Ladram Bay will find it a worthwhile detour, though you're not looking at more than 20 minutes unless you're really settling in with the wildlife.

Nearby Exeter gives you the infrastructure - cafes, parking, facilities - so you won't be caught short. The viewpoint itself appears to be free and always accessible, which is how it should be. If you're staying at Castle Brake Holiday Park just down the road, it's practically on your doorstep and worth a look when the light's decent. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be better for both the light and the wildlife activity. Not a destination in itself, but a solid addition to a Devon coastal holiday if you've got an hour to spare.
