Black Law

The walk up Black Law rewards you with one of the best views across East Lothian, though the climb itself is modest enough that you won't need mountaineering boots. It's a proper little peak rising above the surrounding farmland near Dunbar, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Firth of Forth and beyond. The summit itself is fairly bare - no shelter, no café, just you and the wind - but that's rather the point.

This is one for walkers who like their views without the fuss. The route takes about an hour from the base, depending on your pace and how many times you stop to catch your breath. It's the sort of hill that feels substantial when you're climbing it but looks modest from a distance, which is exactly what makes it satisfying. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it tedious once they realise there's nothing to do at the top except look at the scenery.

The terrain is moorland and rough grass, so proper boots are wise rather than optional. Come in the afternoon if you can, when the light's better for photographs and the midges are less interested in you. Dunbar itself is close enough for lunch afterwards - there are decent spots in town.
