Black Loch

The water here is properly dark - almost black when the light hits it wrong, which is how the loch got its name. It's a small body of water sitting in the Aberdeenshire hills near Banchory, the sort of place you'd stumble upon while exploring the quieter corners of the Scottish Highlands rather than deliberately plan a day trip around.

What you get is a straightforward walk with decent views across the water to the surrounding hills. The setting's pleasant enough if you're already in the area - gentle hills, some woodland, and the usual Highland stillness. It's the kind of spot where you can sit for twenty minutes without seeing another person, which counts for something. The walk itself isn't demanding, so it works well for families who want to stretch their legs without proper hiking boots being essential.

If you're staying at Feughside Caravan Park or Glen Dye Cabins nearby, it's an easy addition to a weekend itinerary. Same goes for Banchory Lodge if you're based further south. Don't expect dramatic scenery or rare wildlife. This is quiet countryside rather than a showstopper attraction. Allow an hour if you're walking round it properly, maybe ninety minutes if you're dawdling.

The practical side: access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's no official visitor infrastructure. Best visited on clearer days when the hills are actually visible - on grey Scottish days it can feel a bit bleak. Locals use it regularly for dog walks and casual rambles, which tells you what kind of place it is. Solid for a half-hour detour, nothing more.
