White Hill

Just outside Banchory, this modest hill won't challenge serious climbers but rewards casual walkers with proper views across the Dee Valley. The path winds through mixed woodland before opening onto heather-covered slopes, taking most people around 45 minutes to reach the summit.

Families will find it manageable - the gradient's steady rather than punishing, though toddlers might struggle with the final rocky section. Teenagers often moan about the climb but usually admit the views were worth it once they're up there. Dog walkers love it for the freedom at the top.

What strikes you first is how the Cairngorms suddenly appear laid out to the west, while the River Dee snakes silver through the valley below. On clear days you can pick out Lochnagar's distinctive profile. The summit itself is fairly exposed, so pack layers even in summer.

Being free and accessible year-round makes it a solid choice for families staying at nearby parks like Aboyne Loch or Banchory Lodge. It's hardly Scotland's most dramatic peak, but for a morning stretch of the legs followed by lunch in Banchory, White Hill does the job nicely. Allow two hours return including a proper stop at the top.
