Black Parks

Black Parks sits just outside Fort William, a proper Highland nature reserve that punches well above its weight. You're looking at moorland and woodland habitat that's genuinely wild - the kind of place where you'll actually spot red squirrels and golden eagles if you're lucky. There's a network of walks threading through the reserve, ranging from easy forest strolls to proper hill treks depending on your mood and fitness.

It's the kind of spot where families with older kids or keen walkers will genuinely lose an afternoon. The views back towards Ben Nevis and across the glens are sharp and open. Bring binoculars if you're remotely interested in birds - the raptors here are stunning. The moorland is particularly good in late summer and early autumn when the heather blooms purple across the hillsides.

Allow anything from ninety minutes for a gentle trot round to a full morning if you're doing the longer circuits.

If you're staying at Ben Nevis Holiday Park or Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park - both minutes away - Black Parks is a no-brainer add-on. You'll get far fewer people than the honeypot trails on Ben Nevis itself, and honestly, the walking is often better. Real Highland landscape without the crowds.
