Black Rhadley Hill

Standing at 393 metres, this modest peak on the Welsh-English border offers surprisingly good views for relatively little effort. Black Rhadley Hill sits in proper walking country between Shrewsbury and the Shropshire Hills, making it a decent warm-up climb if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Woodbatch Camping or Mellington Hall.

The walk up is straightforward enough - no technical scrambling or anything fancy, just a steady plod through sheep pasture and the odd patch of bracken. Takes about 45 minutes from most approach routes. What you get at the top is a proper 360-degree view taking in the Welsh hills to the west and rolling Shropshire farmland spreading east towards Shrewsbury.

Families with older kids will manage this fine, though toddlers might struggle with the distance. Walkers looking for something more challenging will find it a bit tame, but it's well worth the walk if you're after views without the crowds you get on Long Mynd or the Stiperstones.

Best tackled in clear weather - there's not much shelter up there if the weather turns. The hill works well as part of a longer ridge walk, or just as a morning stretch before heading back to your caravan for lunch.
