Roundton Hill

Roundton Hill rises sharp and sudden from the Powys borderlands, a proper little cone that catches you off guard when you're driving through the back roads between Shrewsbury and the Welsh valleys. It's not a mountain - more of a determined bump on the landscape - but the views across the English-Welsh frontier make the short walk worthwhile.

The summit sit around 300 metres, and on a clear day you can see across the Shropshire plains toward Caer Caradoc and beyond. The walk takes maybe thirty minutes up from the nearest road, and it's steep enough to get your heart going but never tedious. This is proper walking country - no café at the top, no visitor centre, just grass, gorse, and the sound of wind.

Family groups with decent walkers will get the most from it. Younger kids might find half an hour of gradient a bit much, but teenagers onwards should manage fine. It's the sort of peak that teaches you something about effort and reward without being dramatic about it.

Based at one of the nearby pods or campsites - Sunrise Pods sits closest at 2.7 miles, though honestly most are clustered within a stone's throw - Roundton works as a morning outing before heading to bigger walks in the Stiperstones or toward the Long Mynd. Go when the light's clear. Mist strips the whole point of it. Free to access, naturally. Allow a couple of hours including the scramble up and time to sit about at the top.
