Blackheath Down

The view from Blackheath Down stops you dead. You're standing on proper open heathland near Fordingbridge, and the landscape just rolls away in front of you - all gorse and bracken and that particular shade of purple when the heather's flowering. It's not dramatic in the Alpine sense, but there's something quietly commanding about the sweep of it.

This is walking country, full stop. The down itself sits within the New Forest area, so you're looking at sandy paths that shift under your boots and scrubland that feels genuinely wild despite being just minutes from civilization. Most visitors come for the same reason people visit any elevated heath in Dorset - to stretch their legs and clear their head. The walk to the top takes twenty minutes or so from the nearest car park, depending on which approach you take. Kids will manage it fine, though they might get bored if you dawdle too long at the summit.

There's no visitor center or facilities up here, which is either a blessing or a nuisance depending on your mood. Bring water. The best time is late summer when the heather's at its peak, though honestly any day without horizontal rain is decent.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Hill Cottage Farm is only three miles away, or Summerlands and Chalke Valley if you're staying a bit further out - Blackheath Down makes a solid half-day outing alongside other forest walks. It's not the sort of place you'd plan a day around on its own, but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're in the area.
