Pistle Down

The walk up Pistle Down rewards you with one of those views that makes the huffing and puffing worthwhile. It's not exactly a mountain - we're talking about 130 metres of elevation gain from Fordingbridge - but the New Forest stretches out beneath you in proper waves of green, and on a clear day the perspective shifts how you understand the landscape.

The peak itself is modest, honestly. There's no summit shelter or trig point, just scrubby heathland with gorse and bracken. But that's part of its charm - you won't find the crowds here that descend on the flashier viewpoints. Most people use it as part of a longer loop walk rather than a destination in itself, which makes sense given it takes about forty minutes to climb from the nearest car park.

Walkers will get the most satisfaction from this one. The terrain can be boggy underfoot after rain, so proper boots matter. Families with young children might find the gradient a bit relentless for small legs, and there's nothing to do once you're at the top except admire the view and turn around.

If you're staying at Hill Cottage Farm or any of the other caravan parks near Fordingbridge, this works nicely as a half-day excursion. Pair it with a proper walk through the Forest itself - the New Forest has plenty of easier, longer trails that suit all abilities. Go early to bag the best light, and don't bother in thick mist. The whole thing takes two to three hours depending on your pace and whether you linger at the top.
