Blacklaw Hill Trig Point

The walk up Blacklaw Hill rewards you with one of those views that makes you understand why people bother with Perthshire in the first place. It's not a dramatic peak - we're talking around 300 metres - but the trig point at the summit gives you proper 360-degree views across the Tay valley and beyond. On a clear day you can pick out the Sidlaws and the Ochill Hills, and the sense of space is genuinely impressive for such an unpretentious outing.

The approach from Cupar is straightforward enough, a steady pull through moorland that takes most people forty minutes to an hour. It's not a technical climb, just relentless enough that you'll notice it. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the final push tedious. History enthusiasts won't find much to detain them up here - it's really about the vantage point and the walking itself.

The main thing to time right is the weather. Come on a grey day and you're basically paying your knees to stare at cloud. Come when it's clear and you'll want to stay up there longer than you'd planned. There's no facilities at the summit, so bring water and something to eat if you're making an afternoon of it.

If you're camped at South Valleyfield, this sits nicely as a morning expedition before heading elsewhere. The Tay valley has plenty of other walks in the area, so you won't run out of options if the weather plays ball.
