Blackthorn Wood

The woodland around Blackthorn stretches across rolling Northamptonshire countryside, offering proper walking territory without the crowds you'd hit at bigger reserves. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just trees, paths, and the occasional flash of woodland birds if you're lucky.

The walks here suit anyone who enjoys a decent ramble but isn't after anything too strenuous. The paths wind through mixed woodland where you'll spot hawthorn, oak, and plenty of undergrowth that comes alive in spring. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; the woodland supports woodpeckers and nuthatches. Family groups with kids aged eight-plus will manage the terrain fine, though younger ones might struggle with the distance. A two-hour loop is sensible if you're not rushing.

It's free to access, which is always welcome. Spring's the obvious choice for bluebells and bird activity, though autumn's quite good for colour if the light's right. Summer gets muggy and the paths can be overgrown.

From here, Grendon Lakes is just over four miles away - a proper contrast with its lake-side pitches and facilities - making it an easy base if you want a mix of woodland walking and campsite amenities. Moon Valley Glamping Retreat sits about five and a half miles south if you prefer something with more creature comforts. Either way, Blackthorn Wood fills the gaps between days at the water.

Not a destination in itself, but a solid addition to a park-based holiday in the area.
