Blaenrhondda Park

The Afan Valley's best-kept secret sits just inland from Port Talbot - a sprawling nature reserve that feels properly remote despite being minutes from civilisation. Blaenrhondda Park spreads across the valley floor with woodland trails threading through native broadleaf and conifer stands, the whole place framed by steep hillsides that climb sharply on either side.

You're here for the walking, mainly. The trails range from gentle riverside strolls to proper hill work - nothing technical, but the climbs are genuine enough to get your heart going. The river itself is the real draw: clear-running water over rocks, proper valley atmosphere without the crowds you'd hit at more famous Welsh spots. History buffs will appreciate that this was mining country once - you spot the bones of it if you know where to look, though the reserve isn't about industrial heritage visits.

Families with older kids and keen walkers will get the most from it. Younger children might find it a bit samey after the first mile. Allow two to three hours minimum if you're doing a decent loop, longer if you're taking it slowly and stopping to watch wildlife.

It's a solid companion visit if you're based at Willow Springs Campsite nearby - proper fresh-air stuff without needing to book anywhere or queue. The reserve works year-round, though autumn when the canopy thins gives you the best views up the valley. Spring's lovely too when the water runs high off the hillsides.
