Blair Hill

Views across Torbay stretch endlessly from this modest Devon summit, making the steady climb through farmland well worth the effort. Blair Hill rises just west of Newton Abbot, offering one of the area's finest vantage points without the crowds you'll find on Dartmoor's bigger peaks.

Families with older children will manage the ascent comfortably - it's more of a proper walk than a gentle stroll, but nothing too demanding. The reward comes at the top where the English Riviera spreads out below, with Torquay's hotels and harbours clearly visible on clear days.

Come early morning or late afternoon for the best light, though any time works if you're after the exercise rather than photography. There's no admission fee - this is just good old-fashioned countryside walking accessible from several footpaths.

Staying at nearby glamping spots like The Smithy or Brownscombe puts you right on the doorstep, while guests at Parkdean's Torquay park can easily drive over for a morning hike. The hill makes a lovely counterpoint to beach days - proper Devon countryside that reminds you there's more to this county than just seaside resorts.
