Wrigwell Hill

Steep paths wind up through bracken and gorse to this modest summit between Newton Abbot and the Dartmoor foothills. The climb isn't particularly challenging - about 20 minutes from the nearest parking spot - but the views from the top justify the effort. On clear days you can see right across the South Devon countryside towards Torbay, with the darker mass of Dartmoor proper rising to the west.

Walkers will appreciate this as a gentle warm-up before tackling Dartmoor's bigger peaks, though families with young children might find the uneven terrain a bit much. The hill sits in that lovely band of countryside where Devon's gentler farmland meets the moor's wilder edges.

There's no formal path to the top, so you'll need decent boots and a sense of direction. Allow an hour for the round trip if you're taking your time. Spring brings brilliant gorse flowers and fewer midges than summer, making it the best time to visit.
