Bleak Down

Standing at 190 metres above the Undercliff, this chalk down delivers some of the finest coastal views on the island. The grassy summit offers a proper panorama across the English Channel - on clear days you can spot France lurking on the horizon, while below, Ventnor's terraced houses tumble down towards the sea like a Victorian postcard come to life.

Hikers will appreciate the network of bridleways that wind up from the coastal towns, though it's a fairly steep climb from Ventnor. The walk takes about forty-five minutes if you're moderately fit, longer if you're stopping to catch your breath and admire the views. Dogs love the open grassland, and families with older children will find plenty of space to roam.

Timing matters here - early morning offers the best light for photography and fewer crowds, while late afternoon can be spectacular when the sun catches the white cliffs. The exposed position means it's windy year-round, so pack layers even in summer.
