The name might sound ominous, but there's nothing sinister about these well-established paths winding through mixed woodland - just the sort of place where you can lose yourself for an hour or two without bumping into crowds.

Walkers will find decent trails here, though they're not waymarked so bring your sense of direction. Kids love scrambling about among the fallen logs and hunting for wildlife, though keep younger ones close as some paths peter out into brambles. The canopy provides proper shelter on drizzly days, making it a good backup when beach plans fall through.

Being so close to Ventnor means you can easily combine woodland rambles with trips to the town's botanical gardens or beach. It's free to wander about, which is always a bonus when you're trying to entertain the family without breaking the bank. Best in late spring when the bluebells put on a show, or autumn when the leaves turn. The wood sits conveniently between several holiday parks including Appuldurcombe Gardens and Warren Hill Camp, making it an easy escape from the campsite when you fancy stretching your legs properly.
