Blenheim Free Church

A modest Victorian chapel just outside Marlow, Blenheim Free Church is the sort of place you'd stumble upon while walking the Thames Path rather than plan a special trip for. Built in the 19th century, it's a straightforward red-brick structure with the kind of understated charm that characterises rural English nonconformist chapels - no grand architecture, no theatrical flourishes, just honest workmanship.

Inside, it's plain and light, with simple wooden pews and clear glass windows. There's a calm to the space that comes from genuine age and regular use rather than museum-like preservation. The congregation, though small, keeps the place properly maintained.

It appeals mainly to architectural historians keen on Victorian religious buildings or walkers who enjoy poking into local churches along the Thames Valley. If you're camping at one of the nearby parks - Hurleyford Farm or Hurley Riverside are close by - and fancy a gentle riverside ramble with a bit of local character, you could swing past. But it's not worth a dedicated journey. Twenty minutes is enough, unless you're the type to sit quietly and soak up the atmosphere.

The real draw is the setting rather than the building itself. You're in proper Thames-side walking country here. Combine it with Marlow town centre, the riverside pubs, and the surrounding footpaths, and it slots nicely into a day exploring the area. Go on a weekday morning when it's likely to be open and peaceful.
