Blithfield Reservoir

Water stretches for miles here, creating one of the largest reservoirs in the Midlands and a proper haven for birdlife. Blithfield Reservoir sits between Rugeley and Uttoxeter, its 800 acres offering excellent walking opportunities along well-maintained paths that circle much of the shoreline. The western side provides the best views, particularly from the causeway that cuts across one section.

Birdwatchers will have a field day. The reservoir attracts everything from common waterfowl to rarer migrants, with autumn and winter bringing the most variety. Walkers can tackle the full circuit in about three hours, though shorter loops work well for families with younger children.

Fishing is popular here too, with day tickets available for those wanting to try their luck with the pike, perch and roach. The water can look quite industrial on grey days, but when the sun's out it's genuinely lovely.

Staying at one of the holiday parks near Uttoxeter puts you within easy reach. Lane Tree Hideaways and Canalside Camping are both under four miles away, making this an easy morning or afternoon excursion. Allow half a day if you're planning the full walk, or just an hour for a gentle stroll and some bird spotting from the main viewing areas.
