Bluebell Railway Museum

The smell of coal smoke and hot steam hit you before you round the corner - that's when you know the Bluebell Railway means business. This isn't some static museum where you peer at engines through glass; you actually ride these restored locomotives through the Sussex countryside, which makes it completely different from the usual heritage railway fare.

The line runs between Horsted Keynes and Sheffield Park, with several stations in between where you can hop off and explore. The engines themselves are Victorian and Edwardian relics, lovingly maintained by volunteers who clearly know every rivet. You'll see them being worked on in the running sheds if you time it right - watch a retired engineer explain how a 1920s tank engine actually works and you'll understand why this place has such devoted followers.

It's genuinely brilliant for kids aged six upwards, though toddlers might find a 40-minute journey a bit much. Families stay for half a day at least. Adults who remember steam trains from childhood get properly nostalgic. History types will spend hours in the museum buildings looking at photographs and technical drawings.

If you're camping nearby - and Wild Boar Wood Campsite is barely two miles away - you could easily slot a railway visit into a broader Sussex trip. The Secret Campsite and Hook Farm are also close enough. Go midweek if possible; weekends get rammed with enthusiasts and school groups. Check the website for special events like dining trains or "Day Out with Thomas" if those appeal. It's not cheap, but it's worth every penny.
