Sussex has quietly become proper wine country, and Bluebell Vineyard Estates is where you'll see why. This working vineyard sits just outside Haywards Heath, rolling downs and vines stretching out in that particular way English vineyards do - a bit unexpected, a bit brilliant.

You're looking at production that's taken seriously here. The vines themselves are worth the visit if you care about that sort of thing, but the real draw is tasting what they've actually made. English sparkling wine has stopped being a joke, and Bluebell's output proves it. The setting feels less tourist trap than many of its competitors - genuinely agricultural rather than manufactured.

It works best for anyone with even a passing interest in wine or food. Families with older kids will find it educational without being tedious. You won't get much from a flying visit though - allow a couple of hours minimum if you're doing a proper tasting. The estate rewards lingering.

If you're based at Wild Boar Wood Campsite or Hook Farm just down the road, this makes an excellent afternoon detour without requiring a full day's commitment. You could easily combine it with other bits of Sussex countryside - the vineyards aren't isolated, they're woven into proper hiking territory.

Check ahead for opening arrangements and whether tastings need booking. English vineyard seasons can be unpredictable, and they don't always keep standard hours. Worth the effort though if you time it right.
