Boatyard Boulders

Rough granite blocks scattered across an old industrial site create one of the Midlands' more unusual climbing spots. These artificial bouldering walls, built from recycled concrete and stone, offer everything from gentle slabs for beginners to seriously overhung challenges that'll have experienced climbers gritting their teeth.

Climbing enthusiasts will find around 30 different problems here, ranging from V0 to V8 grades. The beauty lies in the variety - technical face climbs, powerful overhangs, and some proper slopers that'll test your grip strength. It's not the prettiest location, admittedly, wedged between industrial units near Nottingham, but the quality of climbing more than makes up for the setting.

Families with older kids might enjoy watching the action, though this is really one for serious boulderers rather than casual visitors. Most problems can be tackled in trainers, but proper climbing shoes will give you a real advantage on the trickier routes.

Expect to spend a good two to three hours here if you're climbing seriously. The site works well as part of a climbing tour around Nottinghamshire, and you're perfectly placed for stays at nearby Holme Pierrepont Campsite or the Nottingham Camping and Caravanning Club Site. Just don't expect changing facilities - come prepared.
